RideHome
RideHome is a third person game using a unicycle as a way to use balance and continuous motion at once. The game controls are a simple WAD as there is no going backwards which is probably the most unique aspect of the game.
How I Started:
I created RideHome with the intention of using balance as a level of difficulty for the player. However I did not want to do something many other designers have done. I kept it simple by grabbing a unicycle asset and used simple Pro builder to build a ground base to work on the unicycle movement.
I then moved on to the design of the level. Trying to add obstacles that would cause the player to always be moving back and forth instead of just forward if they tried to. With 2 checkpoints and with each part getting harder than the other to challenge the players. I tried to work on moving obstacles and wanted to incorporate “tight rope walking” into a part of the game which is near the end of the level. The player cannot fall down or stop moving because of the unicycle seat falls down to the ground the player is transported back to the checkpoint they last passed.
End of the week:
Very quickly I actually started working on the visual effects using Unity’s URP to add effects and color to add a mood to the game. Along with adding a trail renderer at the end of the wheel, and a spotlight on the unicycle.
I added a timer to add a challenge between other players that seemed to work well with another game I designed, “Big Steppers”. With no real punishment for players to take their time with the level.
