2 Week Final

Week 1:

I had an idea to use Unity’s unlit material as a way to challenge players sense of direction.

I then decided to use paint ball as a way to incorporate the changing color. I wanted to use a controller, but using Unity’s new Input system I was able to use both any controller and mouse and keyboard. To begin I just had one level for players to move around in and it was simple. Find the door. The door is white and doesn’t change when the paint ball hits it so when the wall changes color, you can clearly see the door adding a challenge to the players to look for it. I then added four different colors for players to swap through so that they have to change colors to get a better grasp on the room around there and where walls, the ground and objects are.

What I said right after week 1:

“Most of the challenges came from the input, using the input action system made the inputs very confusing to me, even in the play test unfortunately the forward was not working. Also sometimes the shooting doesn’t work, like clearly you hit the object but the color isn’t changing. I fixed this by slowing down the bullet movement speed since I believe the bullets trigger was moving too fast for detection to happen since every update is 1/60th of a second. I learned to change colors on objects using collision events, and just working on a basic control for controllers. I enjoyed the feeling of shooting, it feels good to just spam the shooting button, with the shaking, with the particles, reloading feels good, jumping feels good, I was just trying to make the simple mechanics feel good.”

Basically after week 1: i had the sniper shooting different colors to change the walls color, movement of the player, and the door all done.

Week 2:

Right after week 1: It was UI, level design and detailing. I first did the pause menu adding sensitivity so that players can change it based on if they were playing with controller or mouse and keyboard. Also wanted players to be able to see the controller mapping. So I made one in Adobe Photoshop.

What I said right after week 2:

“Many of the issues and problems I had this time around were just with the level design. And trying to get my problem across. These kinds of levels are hard to tell how hard and confusing my levels are. Since I made the levels and knew where everything was. I solved this by having my brothers play and friends too. It definitely helped, however I do still think it could get easier or more straightforward. Being straightforward was the difficulty, trying to run in the fine line of making sense and not. Leaving room for thinking. I also struggled with what I talked about before with parenting and even changing my transform. At the part with red columns moving, I wanted to just change the player's transform , but it wasn’t working, so I just reset the scene. And of course I made the moving platforms stop when shot to solve the parenting problem.

I learned more about designing levels. The smartest thing I did was add a starting coroutine which helped me tell the players at a slow pace piece by piece how to play the game. I even added a glass like material on the top and the bottom. When I did this the idea was to make it easier for players to get the hang of the controls before moving on. I made the game easier than intended, added a lot of ammo, added sounds and arrows, and made objectives more clear. All so that players don’t hit the wall of confusion however some did just on platforming alone. Struggling to get control of and the hang of a controller and a 3D platformer. While also making it harder for people with experience. I guess in my mind I thought I would make it hard enough for players to feel like they had to reset at least once before getting to the end.

I enjoyed seeing my final product being played. With all honesty I was nervous because I had high expectations and put many hours. Although it wasn’t perfect, I did enjoy the experience of making this game since I feel like I made a working functioning 10-30 minute game in 2 weeks.“
