Notifs

April 2025

Notifs is a short prototype game that captures mindless swiping and sleepless nights that technology has trapped us into.

Start:

I created the art background for the game and message animation in Adobe Photoshop. I made the messages white so i could intergrate colors in them later, something I learned to code from the “The Last Coral” game jam.

Mechanics:

I created a script that focused on instantiating the messages, then coded it that you can click and drag them around. I needed then to only be able to drag them away from their initail position without changing their position unless the player drags the message far enough. Then I coded them to be destroyed with Destroy().

I made the losing condition having 10 notifation prefabs in the scene. With no winning condition in the game and no score. Similating real life and how its none stop continuous mindless swiping with no sleep or sense of stopping.
I then added random swiping and phone notifcation sounds that play when the prefabs are created and destroyed so that users don’t get annoyed hearing the same sounds.

Sound and Music:

Lastly to be able to tell when you’re losing, I added this crowd sound that loops to the scene. its at 0 volume until you start letting the prefabs pile up, then the sound increases 0.1f for every notifcation on the scene getting louder the more notifcations you let stay on screen. This is to simulate the peer pressure to use you phone and the thoughts of answering your phone at night
