Pitch:

The Infected in the Last of Us can reproduce now! They kidnapped humans and are making them race an american ninja warrior course to decide who will be soup, the chef who makes the soup, or the newly infected that eats the soup!

How we started:

We had to pick a game that most of us have played before to create a ritual. We decided to create a ritual using The Last of Us video game. Seeing that the story and world building was very well put together. As a group we created a ritual where “The Last of Us” the “infected” are able to repopulate, getting smarter with every generation. With that they decided to have rituals with the small number of survivors left. And since they do not need to infect every single human since they can reproduce now; they will have a game like “America Ninja Warriors to entertain themselves with the older generations as audience. In the ritual three survivors race to the finish line without knowing the outcome.

American Ninja Warrior

Outcome:

First place: becomes infected
Second Place: Becomes the chef
Third Place: Becomes soup for the infected

Developing the Game:

I started off with the simple running mechanic inspired from Temple Run and Subway Surfers. I added jumping and climbing to the game to add some more movement. These code was simple, but the way the players had to use the controls weren’t. In this game we were tasked as a group to create a “queer controller”.

Temple Run
Subway Surfers

As a group we made our roles and went to work to create a board using a skate board to use as left and right motion for balance. We wanted players to have to move their bodies to control the survivor. Then we decided to add a mic to detect sound for yelling. This was for climbing and jumping. We want the users to experience the pressure and rush that the survivors would feel that situation.

This “queer” controller helps with

IMMERSIVENESS: More physical, immersive interaction than regular controllers.

PHYSICALITY: Physical aspect of controller reflects the “high-stakes” feel of the game.

BALANCE: Balance of ecosystem - fungus vs immune systems

Fabrication and Technology

“Hoverboard”

Controlled by a Gyroscope/accelerometer.

Using the accelerometer: its values trigger keypress

Microphone

Reads the intensity of sound and when it reaches a certain value it triggers the jump.

To climb the sound must sustain for longer period

1.5 months to complete
